What is agriculture?

Agriculture is the basis of all civilization. It is part of everything from the food we eat to the clothing we wear. Agriculture shapes many of the traditions and values that this country was built on. Agriculture is the science, art, and occupation of producing crops, raising livestock, and cultivating the soil.

Agriculture also includes:

  • processing, financing, marketing, and distribution of agricultural products;
  • farm production supply and service industries;
  • the use and conservation of land and water resources;
  • health, nutrition, and food consumption;
  • development and maintenance of recreational resources; and
  • related economic, sociological, political, environmental, and cultural characteristics of the food and fiber system.
