Agronomy is a branch of agriculture focused on the study of plants and soils and their environment. Agronomic science and technology are basic to sustaining the world’s food supply and a quality environment. People who work in the field of agronomy are called agronomists. Their job is to make sure that crops are grown in a way that protects the environment. The first farmers were like agronomists; they also worked to improve the soil, crops, and the environment in which they lived and worked.
Agronomists work in some of the following areas:
- soil fertility
- land use
- environmental preservation
- preserving water quality
- preserving natural environments
